It is a tragic ending to King Saul. He was defeated not only by the Philistined but by himself and in how he died. He took his own life. There was nothing heroic or honorable about this ending. He lived a life that was first annointed by God to be king but then spoiled that right by pursuing himself and not God. One interesting fact about Saul's death was he not only killed himself but the Philistined took his body and cut off his head. They took his armor to their temple of Ashtaroth and they fastened his body to the wall of Bethshan for all to see (1st Samuel 31:8-10). Even though Saul ended his own life and the glory and honor was not there and he turned his back on God we see that there were still men who stood up for God. The Philstines paraded Saul to their people and their fake gods. They praised these fake gods for the death of Saul. There were mean of Jabeshgilead who heard about this and took the body down and buried Saul.
When we hear news of people that have turned their backs on God and maybe there is tragedy that falls upon them, what is our reaction? Is it of sorrow or this is what they deserved? Obviously when the prodigal is out and about they do not bring glory to God because they pursue themselves but still their should be grief. As we hear about family members that may go off and do their own things and turn their backs on God we need to remember God is so great and knows all things. Our love for him should pass on to love those that turn their backs on God for a short period.
May God Bless you this week
